S.E. Nash is a visual artist who engages with microbial life through the inclusion of edible fermented foods in sculptural installations. In May 2017, Nash’s solo show Lactobacillus Amongus at PLUG Projects included all of Kansas City’s sourdough starters (that the artist could find and collect) in a series of sculptures. At the closing event, participants made sourdough baked goods to eat at a gallery potluck. Nash has had recent shows and events at Living Arts, in Tulsa, OK, and at Paragraph Gallery in Kansas City, MO. Nash’s first solo show with fermented foods was held at Black Ball Projects in Brooklyn, NY in 2016.

Nash was born in Memphis, TN in 1980. They received an MFA in painting from Yale University in 2005 and a BFA in painting from the University of Tennessee in 2003. Nash is currently a Charlotte Street Foundation studio resident for a second term. They received an Arts KC grant for Lactobacillus Amongus and were awarded a Rocket Grant Research and Development award in 2017 for a project involving community gardening and fermented sodas. Nash teaches in the Foundation Department at the Kansas City Art Institute as a Visiting Assistant Professor.
