National Geographic Live - Cristina Mittermeier: Standing at the Water's Edge

During Cristina Mittermeier’s time with the Kayapó people in the Amazon, Mittermeier documented a society that relied on their local waterway to survive—and found their way of life threatened by a massive new dam. In British Columbia, she found First Nations protecting their sacred headwaters, and in Hawaii, a new community of indigenous peoples seeking to reclaim their connection to the sea. She learned that one concept bound these three disparate communities together: “Enoughness,” or taking only that which you need. With her fascinating images and stories captured while embedded with these cultures, Mittermeier explores the meaning of living with just enough to leave our planet intact.

National Geographic Live speakers share their journeys of exploration from being on assignment around the world. Illustrated with award-winning photography and video, each evening concludes with a speaker-led audience Q&A session.

For its seventh season at the Kauffman Center, National Geographic Live features underwater photographer Brian Skerry (Jan. 9); wildlife photographer Florian Schulz (Feb. 6); marine biologist/photographer Cristina Mittermeier (March 6); and NASA astronaut Terry Virts (May 1). Photographer Pete McBride and writer/filmmaker Kevin Fedarko close the 2018 series with a special engagement event on June 5.
