The Butcher's Son

A folk musical memoir, The Butcher’s Son tells the story of the Tran family’s escape from Vietnam and their resettlement in the Kansas cattle country. The play was recently selected for the Chicago Musical Theatre Festival.

Local actor, songwriter and entrepreneur Vi Nhan H. Tran and castmates present a "performance memoir" recounting the flight of his family from Saigon in the 1980s, their capture by the Khmer Rouge, life in refugee camps, and eventual arrival in the meatpacking town of Garden City, KS. The play, particularly relevant for today, relates the tale of a family of refugees, how family stories become family lore and where a family's search for home ends.
