PorchfestKC 2017, an annual musical event held on front porches in Kansas City neighborhoods, will feature nearly 200 bands performing on about 50 porches on Oct. 14.
The festival has expanded from the Valentine neighborhood to the adjacent Roanoke neighborhood this year to allow more musical groups to participate. The larger area will also allow PorchfestKC to offer additional musical genres such as a classical orchestra as well as the more traditional acoustic or near-acoustic styles.
PorchfestKC is one of a growing number of porch fests across the United States. The movement started in Ithaca, New York in 2007 with a goal of bringing together musicians and neighborhoods to create a greater sense of community. The first Kansas City Porch Fest was held in 2014 in the West Plaza neighborhood. By 2016, it had outgrown West Plaza and moved to the Valentine neighborhood. This year, the festival has expanded to include both Valentine and the Roanoke neighborhood.
Free (tipping of bands is strongly encouraged)
