Sol Anzorena

My name is Sol Anzorena, and I’m a visual artist, muralist, artisan and musician from Argentina. My work is principally inspired by the work of that greatest of artists, Nature Herself. For years I’ve been exploring the method and philosophy of creating art not just for the sake of aesthetics, but out of deep respect for the natural world, and so I use only sustainable and eco-friendly materials. I hope to inspire others join me on this journey, so that we all might reconnect with Nature and the peace that She brings. I create my murals using high quality eco-friendly paint for interior and exterior walls. These paints are water-based, non-toxic and zero VOC, while still being durable and color saturated. In my search for materials that are sustainable, I’ve created a variety of artworks with different mediums - paintings that are made using non-toxic paint, jewelry made from upcycled materials, and most recently a series of drawings carved directly on mushrooms!

Hi there! I go by Garol. I am an Aquarius Stellium, 20-something born & raised Kansas City gal and I am so excited to share my art with you. Described by my close friends as "loud", "chaotic", and "so f**king weird", I like to think that the art I create captures that same energy. I spent my life until recently trying really hard to be normal; being a mom, working corporate desk jobs, and doing all of the things young adults were "supposed to do" despite knowing my soul has always been that of a Artist Freakazoid. So, when 2020 happened (gag) I completely short circuited. I was burnt out and done pretending to be comfortable in these molds I never fit into. I quit my job. I ended a long relationship and left the home we made together. I took better care of my mental health. I learned hard lessons and healed old wounds. I met my partner. I started making art that I love. I hope you love it too!

What I make, what I create, is important to me because of why I make it. For longer than I care to admit, I have denied myself the respect and dignity of recognizing what I wanted to give and communicate through my art: love, hope and beauty. Instead, I would toss and turn between making what was popular or what would sell, or what others would recommend me to make. I had refused to give myself permission to examine what makes me come alive in the creative process and was living a half-hearted creative life unawares. It was in the midst of manufacturing pieces for an upcoming show that I had stumbled onto mediums that would ignite my artist voice—mediums representing color, diverse palettes, texture, brilliance and radiance that I had been denying myself access to because I had stunted the communication between my heart and my work. Believe it or not this magnificent shift has only been so recent. My heart speaks to my art. My hope is that my art speaks to you. And I am excited you are with me on this renaissance journey.

Alexander Austin

Alexander Austin has left his artistic mark on Kansas City’s architecture for years. His big break came in 1982, when Austin entered his artwork in the North Florida Fair. Professional billboard artist Alan Pippenger turned a corner and stopped dead in his tracks in front of a drawing of Stevie Wonder that Austin had submitted. “I found myself rooted to the spot I was standing,” Pippenger says. “It was a simple drawing, done entirely in pencil, that grabbed me by the throat.” Pippenger mentored Austin for three years, letting him fill in lettering for billboard ads, teaching him how to use special brushes. In 1994, Austin received national recognition when the Studio Museum in Harlem included his work in a show titled “Black Romantic: The Figurative Impulse in Contemporary African-American Art.” Listing him as one of the top 30 African American artist working in the United States of America. His work has graced the pages of Essence magazine, The New York Times, Washington Post, Time magazine and has been seen in commercials and TV shows like Malcolm and Eddie and American Idol. His art is a part of the Sprint collection and hangs in the homes of celebrities like Will Smith and Danny Glover. He has works in many private and corporate collections in and outside of the United States.In 2007 Alexander Austin received a commission to paint the biggest canvas ever, the sweeping southern facade of the Power & Light District. The mural covering 18,000 square feet, transforming a two-block stretch of blank wall into a panorama that now stands as the gateway to the district. Austin received a certificate of appreciation from the Mayor’s office, voted 2009 one of the 100 most influential African American in Kansas city by The Kansas City Globe news paper and honored to sit in baseball’s Hall of Fame John “Buck” O’Neil’s legacy seat at Kauffman’s stadium. Currently, Austin is currently working on a tribute to the Kansas City Monarchs on the new Two Light building.

My work meditates on architecture, infrastructure and landscape through geometric composition and exploratory design. I begin with a focused drafting process to craft a core design and then explore the design system with a series of permutations. In the first part of my process I am creating a world and its rules. In the second, I give myself room to work with, shift and bend those principles to explore possibilities.

Justin Border

In my current series of sculptural painting work, I am exploring visual storytelling. Through the combination of human figures, elements taken from collaged studies and preliminary drawings and an organic texture that mimics topography, an overall dreamlike atmosphere is constructed. Each piece has a narrative, a sense of reminiscing or of folklore. The story lives somewhere between the conscious and subconscious, within their own imaginary realm that we create when viewing them. Process, collecting, re-purposing materials and research are important factors within my working style and I find myself following many of the same patterns when approaching a new work. Small collage and drawing studies allow for a mash-up of imagery that I may edit or add to when creating the final design. I create each sculptural canvas using newspaper, plastic bags, cardboard and wheat paste. The repetitive, meditative movements of the process allows me to hone in on the source of inspiration and clearly translate it to the completed work.

Allison Bowman

Allison Bowman (she/her/hers) is a visual artist who creates abstracted botanical mixed-media environments that connect humans to nature and spreads awareness of how art can be used as a tool for mental health and wellbeing. She moved to the Kansas City area after graduating with a bachelor's degree in fine art from K-State in 2017. Allison has painted murals in Kansas and Missouri, displayed her artwork in art exhibitions locally and nationally, and participated in community projects in the Kansas City area such as Art In The Loop and the KC Parade of Hearts. She served as a Co-Captain of State Arts Advocacy for the state of Kansas through Americans for the Arts from 2021-2023 and has previous work experience in retail art galleries as well as the Arts Council of Johnson County.

Evan Brown

My name is Evan “Doodle Dood” Brown and I am a Kansas City based painter and illustrator with an absolute and utter obsession with what I do. After graduating from the University of Kansas with a degree in Illustration I formed Doodle Dood LLC, a business that centers around my desire to use creativity to promote positivity, growth and change in the minds of kids and adults alike. My brand has gone on to work with companies such as Facebook, Anheuser-Busch, Hallmark, Knoll, Kansas City’s Power and Light District, and the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, among others. Energized by my Native American roots and a deep passion and respect for the outdoors, I find my inspiration in the optical intricacies and vibrant color palettes found in the natural world. I exclusively paint my work by hand, mixing all of my colors out of the primaries in order to keep my work as consistent with nature as possible. My blend of traditional application with contemporary illustration fulfills a desire to bridge the gap between the fine art and illustration worlds. My ultimate mission is to embody the synergy of life and take my viewers on a whimsical journey through the unknown by shedding light on the esoteric side of existence and visually stimulating non-visual sensations such as thought, sound, and consciousness. But most importantly, I enjoy all things out of the ordinary and want nothing more than to create stuff that makes people smile!

GK Callahan

GK Callahan creates cultural change through social engagement, with a focus on humanitarian issues related to public health. As an art administrator, artist, and community engagement professional, GK has over ten years’ experience working in the community arts field. Earning his MFA in social practice at California College of the Arts and his BFA in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute. He built expertise in cultural development through work with Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the City of San Francisco. He founded Please Touch Garden in San Francisco (2010), an outdoor community space that addresses urban agriculture, arts, and disabilities. He is the co-founder and primary producer of Contracting an Issue, an international social awareness art project that explores the continuing impact of HIV/AIDS. Ken Dela

I am currently the Art Director at The Culture House in Olathe, KS and love to mentor young artists and watch them grow. When I’m not mentoring our youth, I am a freelance artist and enjoy seeing what combination of mediums I can put together. My goal in art is to share my vision with the world. I enjoy experimenting with different mediums and using a lot of stencils and shaker cans. I am very versatile with what I can do, that’s what keeps things interesting...anywhere from a street art style to more detailed portrait style work. Currently, I am working on a series of paintings, which are inspired by quotes, sayings, feelings or advice. With our world today so hectic, crazy, busy and bullyish…I use bright contrasting colors with line and pattern, hoping to capture the attention of someone racing by encouraging them to slow down, even if it’s just for a second. If I can touch just one person with one of my paintings, than the painting was a successful. I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to create live paintings alongside musicians, bands, or during events. One of the coolest moments was painting alongside Wynona Judd up in the mountains in Colorado. I've taken 1st place in multiple Adirondack chair mural painting contests. I was commissioned to custom paint some shoes for the mother of Derek Norris's, a Major League Baseball player. I am always learning and am a forever student. I feel that the minute you stop learning is the minute you stop growing and improving...not just in your craft, but also in your life.

Jackie Denning

Jackie Denning is a local of Kansas City and has a degree from K.U. in textile design. Her fourth travel book Hawk One, Snake Zero will be available in February. Her previous travel books are Mr. Campys Goes to... and other Adventures Bippity Bopping Around During the Pandemic 2021 Won One She makes and sells functional ceramics. Her books are available as audiobooks for free on Soundcloud.

Monica Dixon

Monica Dixon is a visual artist living and working in Kansas City. Her multimedia practice is focused on relationships between living bodies and the forms that protect and comfort them. Monica studied painting at the Kansas City Art Institute graduating with a BFA in 2011. She was a two-term resident with the Charlotte Street Foundation, has exhibited locally and internationally, and works in the public art realm. Monica’s studio practice encompasses installation, sculpture, collage, costuming, and movement workshops. Pervasive throughout the various forms her work takes is a fascination with exploring the elusive, seemingly intangible elements of personal reality (memory, emotion, belief, etc.) through sensual experience. She constructs images, objects, spaces, and events meant to encourage playful exploration of the unknown and the uncomfortable. Shortly after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Painting from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2011, she spent a half year engaged in work exchanges on organic farms and gardens in Europe. These experiences led to investigative explorations in permaculture, anthropology, and meditation which she continued to pursue upon returning to the United States. In 2014 she lived and worked at the Kripalu School of Yoga and Ayurveda, then traveled to India. During her three months there she participated in her first Vipassana meditation and worked on a permaculture farm outside of Auroville, Tamil Nadu. After returning to the US, she lived in Brooklyn, New York before moving back to Kansas City, Missouri in 2015. She has exhibited locally as well as internationally. From 2016-2017 she was a resident artist with the Charlotte Street Foundation. This summer was the recipient of the 2017 Art in the Loop Public Art Commission. Monica has been commissioned to create a new public installation at the Winthrop-Rockefeller Institute in Morrilton, Arkansas this coming Spring.

Anita Easterwood

Art in its’ most simplistic nature is a form of communication. And as an artist, I have had to decide what I want to convey through my art. And after 13 years of creating, everyday life has continued to be my inspiration. Fundamentally, that may seem simplistic; but life is profoundly complex and intricate. I am drawn to capturing the complexity of the everyday experience. Life has led me through a unique journey to art. I discovered my love for art early on because my father is also an artist. I grew up appreciating art in its’ many forms. I also grew up respecting the dedication and hustle it takes to be an artist as I watched my father complete projects. Watching my father, “the everyday guy”, follow his love for art helped me discover my own. As I explored my love for art, the “everyday person” is what drew me to being a portrait artist. I found that capturing the essence of someone is difficult but that challenge is what drives my creativity. But beyond the challenge of capturing people, it is also the challenge of capturing a moment and recreating it through my viewpoint as an artist. The “everyday person” has various social identities that intersect in shaping us into who we are. And my identity as a black woman has influenced my artistry. It has been important to me as a black woman to take moments in my art to celebrate the beauty and sophistication that black women embody. Beyond that, I also highlight Black culture and community in my pieces because those are facets of my life that have molded me into the person I am which inherently shapes my lens as an artist. The beauty of the “everyday person” is that we are never just one or two things. We are multi-dimensional. So though my art is influenced by my blackness, it does not define it. It is just one of the many lens I explore when creating. My goal is to create art that is timeless. And by creating art based on everyday life, my art expands overtime as life is my muse.

DEVIN EDWARDS

My name is Devin Edwards I’m a Kansas City native who grew up on the east side of the city. I graduated from Paseo Academy of the fine arts in 2016, then went KCAI for two years. The theme of my artwork is my character, “The Crusader” and the universe I created with him, mixed with cartoons I've grown up with to bring a certain type of childhood wonderment and light in my work. Sparking happy memories and warm feelings within my spectators is a fun goal I take charge of. To make the characters pop, I add contrasting bright colors that draw your eye to be entranced by the art piece. From there, the viewers are invited to speculate on the deeper meanings within my works. The idea of the viewers having their own interpretations of my artwork brings me great joy and fulfillment.

Christopher Vaughan Frye

The Artwork of Christopher Vaughan Frye "Digging and sampling from a variety of sources, Christopher Vaughan Frye, a native Kansas City artist and educator, creates paintings by mixing pop images with street art techniques." Christopher Vaughan Frye was born and raised in the Kansas City Metropolitan where he continues to create and teach art. Frye received his Bachelors of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in Painting from the University of Kansas in 1998 and his Masters of Arts in Education from Avila University in 2005. He exhibits his artwork regularly, taught visual art for 14 years in the Hickman Mills School District and now teaches at Pioneer Ridge Middle School in Gardner, and designs and constructs sets for Blue Valley West HS Theatre Department and Stageworx Theatre Summer Camp. Artist Statement- “Combing the streets and library stacks, digging and sampling from an ever-expanding cache’ of imagery, I create paintings appropriated from a variety of sources: time worn comic books, sailor tattoos, Saturday morning cartoons, classic pin-up girls, skateboarding sub-culture, antique signs, surf rock, roots reggae, and electric blues. Taken from the streets to the studio, my paintings combine the expressionism of graffiti with references from popular culture. Using photos from fashion magazines to obtain facial features, I create stylized portraits, the faces decorated with bright, saturated colors. Starting with bold, expressive brush strokes, I fill the void with slashes of bright colors, stenciled polka dots, and scrubbed over swatches of vibrant and overlapped pigment, which creates a patchwork of passion and energy. My aim is to create collision of vintage pop references which merge with an underpainting of gestural abstraction, reflecting the fast grimy pace of contemporary urban life. It’s this contrasting of techniques from the bold outlined facial expressions mixing with the spontaneous scribbles in the background that I enjoy in creating these paintings.”

Braxton Fuller

Braxton Fuller is an American contemporary artist (b. 1992), based out of Kansas City, Missouri. With a unique artistic journey that began as a poetry writer, he has since evolved into a creator of thought-provoking text and symbolism art. Braxton's innate ability to express himself through language gradually led him to explore the visual realm, where he discovered the power of symbols in enhancing his artistic expression. Each artwork represents a significant period in his life, serving as a visual conduit through which he communicates his personal journey and emotions. Through the use of various mediums, Braxton's bold symbols and wity text work serve as a constant reminder of the importance of effective communication in our lives. At present, Braxton has shifted his focus back to text-based artwork, leveraging his experience and knowledge to make a profound impact in the art world. Braxton's artistic journey serves as a testament to the power of self-discovery and the infinite possibilities that lie within the intersection of language and visual expression. Through his art, he not only reflects his personal experiences but also invites others to explore the depths of their own emotions, fostering a sense of shared understanding and connection in a world often challenged by communication barriers.

Sarah Good

Sarah Good is a local artist with a focus on nature-inspired pieces. Her style is a happy medium between realism and impressionism with playful and whimsical brush strokes. She loves large-scale paintings, especially murals. She is always exploring new styles and subjects, and is open to any artistic opportunity.

Zoe Green

Visual

Zoe paints portraits and segmented parts of the body that show intense color and emotion, with darker, quieter undertones of her past religion and struggles with mental illness. Her small sculptures show red string and flowers encapsulated in a clear resin cast of Mother Mary, mirroring the similar feelings of a delicate violence in her portraits. She attempts to connect and build empathy through her art, and invite viewers to look at what lurks under the surface of her life and others. Zoe’s work continues to be influenced by her surroundings. Her work as a bartender continually brings new people and their stories, and her art is constantly reacting to these new experiences. Zoe was the first place winner at the Kansas City Artist Coalition Undergraduate Show, and her solo show “Exploring Closeness” showed the summer of 2017 at 3 Link Gallery in Smithville, Missouri. She worked at Josephine Sculpture Park in Frankfort, Kentucky as an artist in residence. Now she is back in Kansas City working at the Vanessa Lacy Gallery, and paints on the third floor of the Livestock Exchange Building.
