Maryanna Adelman is a Kansas City based artist. Observational drawing is the root of her work.  Vines, little tangles of wire, bits of string and other detritus found discarded have caught her attention.  During the drawing process, the work pushes beyond the initial exploration of line and moves into metaphor.  The initial snags and snarls become a meditative labyrinth moving through time and space.

More recently, she has explored the alternative photography process of cyanotype.  By placing the same vines and other garden detritus on light sensitive paper and exposing it to sunlight, an immediate and direct record of a singular event is recorded.  Or rather, the imperfect, ambiguous shadow of an event is recorded.

Maryanna earned her BFA in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute and her MA in Studio Art from the University of Missouri, Kansas City.  Her work has been shown at the Nerman Museum, the Late Show Gallery, Habitat Contemporary Gallery, H&R Block Artspace, Arts KC and the Kansas City Artists Coalition.  She also teaches drawing at the University of Central Missouri.
