I am a writer, scholar, and college professor living in Kansas City, MO.

The University of Nebraska Press published my travel memoirs, Canoeing the Great Plains: A Missouri River Summer in 2015 and Seldom Seen: A Journey into the Great Plains in 2009. Canoeing the Great Plains won the 2016 High Plains Book Award in Creative Nonfiction and the Thorpe Menn Literary Excellence Award. My essays and poems have been published in New Letters, Thorny Locust, and The Same. Spartan Press published my book of poems, a brief infidelity and other reveries in 2017.

I earned a doctorate in American History and Literature at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2013. I’ve worked as a journalist for Kansas City newspapers and online publications, earning national and regional awards. I continue writing opinion/editorial essays for a Kansas City online news site. I’ve edited books, taught journalism, and been a union ironworker. I now teach American History and Western Civilization at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, KS.

I hold memoir writing workshops at the Writers Place and Mid-Continent Public Library. I also teach Advanced Nonfiction and Travel Writing with the Mid-Continent/Maple Woods Story Certification Program.
