I’m a visual artist. I started handweaving in 2014. In 2019 I turned my artistic focus on the environment, exploring the colors, shapes and textures of nature through fiber, textiles and encaustic painting. I try to use natural materials whenever possible and whenever relevant, although sometimes a length of polyester or polyethylene or a found object speaks louder than a piece of woven wool or cotton. I experiment with combinations of fiber, rope, yarn, paper, encaustic paints, watercolor, wood and copper to produce layered and textured artworks that are usually brightly colored. Much of my creative effort is done at a simple rigid heddle loom, where I weave mostly with my fingers rather than with manmade tools. When weaving on a larger scale, I use a primitive handmade oversized hanging loom. I also use the techniques of sewing, knitting, felting, stitching, quilting, papermaking, fabric manipulation, sculpture and collage to express ideas and impressions about the natural world in which we live. I create without sketches, illustrations and guides. My artwork is intentionally messy and disheveled, reflecting a degree of chaos often found as nature cycles. My goal as an artist is to encourage audiences to reflect on their own connections and experiences with environments they have known and to consider ways to preserve and sustain such places for future generations.
