Professional and Student Divisions

Winners will receive prize money, a live performance, and a recording of their work

Application Requirements:

  1. An original work written within the past 2 years to be submitted by Sunday, February 14, 2021, by 9pm CST.

  2. Instrumentation is for Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Viola, Cello, Piano, Percussion, or any combination of instruments between 3-7 players.

  3. Time length should be between 5-10 minutes.  Multiple movement works within this time frame are acceptable.

  4. Submissions by .pdf acceptable.  Any recording to accompany the .pdf is appreciated.

  5. Only 1 submission per composer will be considered.

  6. Already premiered pieces are accepted.

  7. Fixed Media electronics acceptable.  Live Media is not permitted.

Notes to Applicants:

  1. Applicants from the Greater Kansas City Metro Area preferred, and geographical distance from KC will be taken into account in the selection process.

  2. Submitted scores should have the expectation to be performed on 3-4 rehearsals.

  3. Minimal use of electronics are permitted (fixed media, play-along tracks, synthesizer, amplified instrument).  Please email the competition with any questions.  If we cannot obtain the required device, the submission will not be considered.

  4. Student division is open to any applicant currently enrolled in a degree (or certificate) granting program.

  5. Professional division open to any applicant currently not enrolled in a degree (or certificate) granting program.

  6. Pieces with no premiere performance or only one performance are preferred, but not required.

  7. Applicants will be notified of results by Monday, March 8, 2021.

  8. newEar aims to record and perform at least one winner from each category.

  9. newEar reserves the right to not select a prize winner.
