Dummy Devotion

Habitat Contemporary Gallery is pleased to present “Dumb Devotion”, an exhibition featuring Austin Gutierrez Opening reception 09.01.23 starting at 5 PM In these works, the artist has largely focused on creating drawings that revel in the ancient art historical tradition of the veneration of legend and monumentality. This is ultimately an attempt to tap into the type of undying devotion and unwavering commitment that artists as varied as the Mughal court painters, the Mexican muralists, and even the stone masons of the Assyrian Empire had for their crafts. Naturally, the artist’s own interests, affinities, and background comes through in full force here and becomes quite apparent when looking at the work in its totality. Despite this, it’s their belief that it is ultimately the viewer’s responsibility to apply any meaning or judgment to the work present. It’s only their wish that the type of dedication seen for millennia on stone can be seen on these drawings. About:Born and raised in Los Angeles California, Austin Gutierrez earned his Associate of Fine Arts at Santa Monica College in 2020 and his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting at the Kansas City Art Institute in 2023. His paintings and drawings have been exhibited in Los Angeles, Oxnard, Kansas City and Chicago. His drawings and paintings largely focus on the humor and significance that can be found in both the mundane and the legendary. Currently, he lives and works in Kansas City Missouri
