For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide when the Rainbow is Enuf

Ntozake Shange’s groundbreaking choreopoem,  For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, is the playwright’s first and most widely produced theatrical work. The choreopoem tells the stories of seven women represented by seven colors, who have survived the triumphs and tragedies of being black women in a world of racism, oppression, and sexism. Named after the colors of the rainbow: Lady in Red, Lady in Blue, Lady in Purple, Lady in Yellow, Lady in Brown, Lady in Green, and Lady in Orange tell stories through poetry, music, and dance. Moving effortlessly from color to color, Shange’s beautiful work allows each color to support the other as women play a chorus for one another or step in the stories of another character. 44 years after the show’s premiere at a small theater in Berkeley to New York City where it became the second play by a black woman to reach Broadway, KCMPT brings you this heartwarming production directed by Lynn King who brings the 20 poems to life to reveal the universal struggle that women share to be seen and heard in the world.  KCMPT celebrates the 1st anniversary of Ntozake Shange’s death with this tribute production of her landmark work that has changed the lives of women of all racial, ethnic, class and sexual identifications around the world.
