MALLIN GALLERY – KIM TAGGART’S unique focus takes graphite to a whole new level in what she likes to define as “graphite painting.” Her technique is a dreamy, surreal-precisionist saturation of tones. Using loose graphite applied with a brush for subtle delineation, her art takes form when charcoal/graphite sticks create contrasting shapes and values. The energetic black and white style of her work forces the viewer to interpret a sunrise or storm without the element of color—to appreciate the raw, unprocessed palette and inspire admiration for its organic contours, texture and graceful form.

CHARNO GALLERY – MARYANNA ADELMAN works to understand how pathways move through space or how a limb joins the trunk. A pathway is not just a way to move from point A to point B in the physical world, but also is a way to move through time, life experiences and memory. In the Re:Mark series, Adelman pushed the idea of moving from observational drawing/ painting to the metaphorical and then back again to focus on line, shape, color and mark making. The essence of landscape suggests a monumental space; however, the actual size of Re:Mark images is intimate.

UNDERGROUND GALLERY – POLLY ALICE developed an archival process of creating textural oil paintings. These natural fibers of cotton, flax, and jute speak to the agricultural foundations of the Midwest where she grew up. The fabrics are ripped and torn to symbolize suffering, the wear of time, and trauma. Then they are mended imperfectly together then stretched over an extra deep museum quality frame. Today, Alice uses a process of layering several kinds of sizing then applying lightfast oil paints and varnishes to create an archival work that not only will last, it is extremely durable over time. The process of painting the work is one of stressing the oil paint to reveal its pigments. These flecks of color are the root or essence of minerals taken from the earth.

UNDERGROUND GALLERY – MICHAEL CHEREPAK’s floral inspired pieces are both a reflection of, an an escape from, a chaotic world. A simple subject to start, leading to mesmerizing compositional puzzles of color and shape. They are full, luscious, chaotic, begging to be reined in. With love for color, an affirmation of life comes thorugh. Challenging color relationships are tested while an affinity for complexity pushes forward as forms become interlocking.

UNDERGROUND GALLERY – SHELLY PINTO’s work is created out of the knowledge she has accumulated in her career as an artist and owner of a handmade paper company called Shizen Design. Since 1991, Pinto has had the privilege of working with screen-printers in India, immersing herself in the heritage of handmade papers and learning the art of screen printing. Within her art she wants the legacy of these screen-printers heritage to live on. Pinto usually starts with a premeditated concept of either patterned screen-printed paper or color and then let their meeting determine the outcome. By layering the paint and showing bits of the paper and texture Pinto purposely leads the viewer into the artwork.
