Thanks to his ‘rock star’ works (eg the ninth symphony’s ‘Ode to Joy’ or the ‘Moonlight Sonata), Beethoven became an iconic popstar in the today’s world of classical music, achieving celebratory status even among the public. On the other hand, Beethoven was one of the most uncomfortable and modernist composers of all times, polarizing his audiences and being rejected by many of his contemporary critics as an intolerable rebel, especially with his late chamber music. After decades performing Beethoven string quartets worldwide, with the renowned Artemis Quartet, as well as his ensemble’s award-winning complete recording on Erato/Warner Classics, Eckart Runge endeavors to rediscover the works for cello and piano with his duo partner Jacques Ammon in a new way. Juxtaposed with elaborate arrangements of revolutionary icons of the rock-pop-jazz history such as Lennon/McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, or David Bowie, Revolutionary Icons’ unexpected perspectives creates an heart-pounding listening experience.
