Shawnee Indian Mission Fall Festival

The 32^nd annual festival is all at the Mission, established in 1839 and a designated National Historic Landmark and Kansas State Historic Site.  Kick off  6-9 on Friday night, with a free bluegrass concert from  The Matchmakers.  Burgers, beer, wine, and pop for sale.  Bring blankets and picnic!  Main Events 10-5 on Saturday and Sunday.  Supervised children’s activities of the 1800’s,  Drum Safari, Boy Scout rope climbing, the Marble Man, archery with home-made bows and  arrows.  Arts and crafts in an authentic Plains Indians teepee.  Living history:  blacksmithing, outdoor iron-pot cooking, log sawing, cider pressing, mule wagon rides.  Vendors  with art objects, woodcrafts, woven fibers, jewelry for sale.  Johnson County Master Gardeners display on-site historical gardens and native plants.  Quilt and needlework shows.  Food from trucks and baked items for sale.   Come early Saturday and raise the flag at 9:30 with a Civil War color guard from both sides.  Then stay from 5:30-7 with the Missouri Free Trappers re-enacting a campfire with the Mountain Men for singing, dancing with the Sugar Ridge Grass Band, and hearing  stories of how to survive in the wilderness.  Live music both days from the Folk Alliance, the Missouri Town Dancers perform, and the festival ends Sunday at 5 with native American dancers from the Pottawatomie Tribe.
