Slowly Made, a solo exhibition by Alyx Jacobs

The Ekru Project is pleased to present Slowly Made: A Collection of Indigo-dyed and Sashiko-stitched Quilts, a solo exhibition by Alyx Jacobs opening August 6, 2021.    Alyx Jacobs utilizes natural indigo-dyeing techniques and traditional hand-sewn Japanese Sashiko stitch work to create, assemble, dye, color, mend, and repair quilts and textiles. With a utilitarian focus on the material and the process, Jacobs surrenders herself to the slowness of quilt-making and the spontaneity and unpredictability of the indigo as a material, and that becomes the real strength of Jacobs’ quilts. Many parts and pieces make up the whole, and Jacobs shows us that humble materials can create a dramatic and sophisticated design. One that is intended to be functional and invites daily use. Her quilts are named for the time it took to create or the person who inspired it to be created, and the simplicity of material and intricacy of each stitch shows the viewer that we can begin to see them in a different yet equally meaningful way.    Alyx Jacobs lives and works in Kansas City, MO. Jacobs received a B.F.A. from Kansas City Art Institute with a degree in Graphic Design and an emphasis in Fiber. Her work has been featured in Folk Magazine, Crema Lab and Better KC. She has lectured classes at Kansas City Textile Arts Center, Lawrence Arts Center and continues to teach Indigo dye workshops periodically. In 2015, she was the recipient of the A11 Award, Cary C.
