The Nativity of Mesner Puppets

The first miracle or mystery plays were performed in the churches of France and England between the 12th and 14th centuries. These biblical pageants originally focused on the story of the Nativity and then grew to include other New and Old Testament tales. 

The mystery plays were first performed by priests, then, as the actor guilds developed, these performances were moved outside the church and became more secular. Some early references to the figures called them motions, an early word for puppets. In France, the dramas were called “Little Marys” or marionettes. 

The priests, and later the guilds, would set up stations and the dramas would be viewed throughout the church as the audience moved from station to station. This practice still continues with the tradition of the Stations of the Cross.
