As a literary community center and gathering place for writers, readers, and the general public, we provide support, resources, and inspiration for those in our region who care about the word as art.

Our story begins in 1977, when Gloria Vando founded Helicon Nine and began publishing fine books of literature and art created by women. In 1992, Vando and her husband William Hickok altered Helicon Nine’s 501 (c)3 designation to establish The Midwest Center for the Literary Arts, which includes
