Artist Statement:

“My work examines the nuance of color and abstract shapes in nature, specifically the interplay between light and color on the surface of water.

The organic shapes and colors in nature build large, familiar pictures of rivers, trees, leaves, and sky, but we rarely stop to see up-close the small, subtle patterns that make up these large figures. These photographs are a meditation on the necessary balance between peace and turbulence that exists in our environment.

Through digital photography and editing, I enhance the tonality and color of images to create abstractions that challenge our understanding of the world as we see it.”

Artist Bio:

Bernadette Hursh is a Kansas City native who draws inspiration for her work from the drastic, varying shifts the climate imprints on its landscape.  Her strong background in both digital and film photography and high end retouching brings emphasis to the colors and shades of her subject matter, while highlighting points of focus for the viewer.

Her work elicits emotion for the simple parts of nature; things we might pass by with a brief glance are given their very own stories within the confines of the frame. The entirety of an ecosystem is captured in an image.

While her personal concentration lies in fine art landscapes and abstract conceptual photography, she has also worked in portraiture, event, food and product, and real estate. She completed her degree in Studio Arts and Professional Photography at Colorado Mountain College.

Bernadette lives with her husband and pets in Merriam, Kansas, spending her free time in nature looking to bring her next inspiration to life through her art.
