Artist Reception: "Tempest" with John Davis Carroll

Presented by ArtsKC – Regional Arts Council at The ArtsKC Gallery

ArtsKC presents local artist John Davis Carroll - a painter and new media artist.

“Tempest” features landscapes on paper using watercolor, ink and gouache. "These paintings question classifications of what is considered natural or unnatural in our surroundings. My subjects are often discovered along bodies of water and other travel routes where forces of nature and human manipulation are accentuated. My interest in this subject started back in 1996 when my wife and I road our bicycles from Kansas City to Seattle. What struck me was that even in the most isolated areas in our world we see human impact and manipulation of nature," says Carroll.

"The paintings in this show are expressions of places I have visited in recent years. Most are accessible and some are exotic to the Midwest. These places include New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio and Russia. My landscape paintings are not just about a place. For me painting is an expression of all five senses. What I am seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling and feeling at that place. It’s also about the emotions of the here and now in my studio as I am painting."
