We invite you to join us for “Whirlwind: Art in Motion” an exhibition of kinetic art sculptures in the bucolic landscapes of the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, on view April 21, 2018-September 30, 2019.
“Whirlwind: Art in Motion” is an incredible showcase of large-scale kinetic art sculptures that are strategically placed throughout the grounds of the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. These kinetic sculptures change and move with light and wind, in a remarkable display of the convergence of art and science.
Kinetic art is a unique art form utilizing the environment to enhance the aesthetic experience for the viewer. Participating artist Lin Emery aptly described the artistry of kinetic sculpture when she said, “Elements are derived from nature, and I borrow natural elements — wind, water, magnets — to set them in motion. The rhythms are influenced by infinite variables: the points of balance, the normal frequency of each form, the interruption of the counterpoise. I juggle, juxtapose, and adjust to achieve the dance or pantomime that I want.”
Featured artists include: Tom Brewitz, Lin Emery, Jeff Kahn, John King, Jeffery Laudenslager, Evan Lewis, Ralfonso, David Seitzinger, Meryl Taradash, and Rein Triefeldt.
Throughout the duration of the exhibit, guided tours are available. During the summer months, children can learn about kinetic art and create their own in various workshops. During the 2018-2019 school year, there will be field trip opportunities for middle and high school students to explore the art and science of kinetic sculpture.
