Exhibition: Illuminating the Queer Experience

This showing of works and accompanying programs exhibit the experiences and perspectives of artists from many facets of the Kansas City LGBTQIA community, and provides a welcoming platform to share their stories with those in and outside of the queer community.

The opening reception will be Friday, June 15th, 5-9pm with work from 20 local LGBTQ artists and literary readings and spoken word performances happening from 7:30-8:30.

The Closing Reception will be Friday, July 20th, 5-8pm, with live music from multiple queer musicians.

Programming:

6/20 – ArtsKC Encounter Series artist discussion panel: Poet Jen Harris, spoken word and visual artist Jeanette Powers and Artist and Producer Joseph Keehn will discuss topics revolving around what it means to be a queer artist in today’s society. 5:30-8:30pm, private event.

6/23 – ArtHouse Listening Room with Summer Osborne  Singer/songwriter Summer Osborne debuts new songs as part of our ongoing ArtHouse Listening Room series. Summer Osborne is an award winning American singer-songwriter who entertains audiences throughout the US and Canada with her magical brand of melodic and lyrically potent genre-jumping performances. 6-9pm, tickets $15

7/11 – Queer Tango Night- The Redux Society of Kansas City presents a queer tango night. The evening includes information on the history of tango, the queer tango movement that’s currently sweeping the globe, tango lessons for couples of all orientations, and professional demonstrations. 6-8pm tickets $10

7/13 – Dr. Sketchy’s LGBTQ night and end of semester finale show. Drag performers and models give short performances and poses for an end of season live drawing session. Participants’ past works will be displayed in a mini show within the larger exhibition. Tickets $10

7/14 - Resistencia Spoken Word Night - Members of KC's own Brown Voices Brown Pulse shed light on the experiences of Queer People of Color through the art of spoken word. 6:30-8:30 pm, tickets $15.

7/19 – GLAMA film screening- The Gay and Lesbian Archives of Mid-America host a screening of their documentary detailing the history of LGBTQ rights and activism in KC. Free, 6-8pm.

 7/20 – Exhibition closing reception - with performances by local bands The Sleazebeats and Vigil and Thieves
