Conceived as a functional string instrument by a trained musician, Aladag’s work appears to be imported exotic form and be appreciated strictly for its aesthetic qualities.
Berlin-based sculptor and video artist Aladag was born in Turkey and raised in Germany, and is particularly engaged in her work by the ways that music and its production both dissolve and reinforce sometimes stereotypical ideas about cultural differences. At the American Jazz Museum, Aladag presents a hybrid construction that merges sculpture, furniture and object.
