Greenlease Gallery Presents "I found a weed"

Presented by Rockhurst University at Greenlease Gallery

The Greenlease Gallery at Rockhurst University will open its 2018-19 exhibition season with “I found a weed,” curated by Kansas City-based artist and curator Jeff Eaton, from Sept. 7 through Oct. 6. Opening with a curator talk from Eaton at 6:30 p.m. and reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, at the Greenlease Gallery, located between Sedgwick and Van Ackeren Halls on the Rockhurst University campus, “I found a weed” features new and recent works of photography, sculpture, painting and sound by artists Elizabeth Allen-Cannon, Lesley Jackson, Lucky Dragons (Luke Fischbeck and Sara Rara), Josh Shaddock and Lina Viste Grønli.

The exhibit takes its title from A.R. Ammons’ poem, Reflective, which serves as the aesthetic anchor point to the exhibit. In his poem, Ammons describes a brief moment of self-reflection after encountering a common weed. Possessing an overarching formal elegance, the exhibition’s works elicit a sense of playfulness, demonstrate attention to detail and craft, and reference traditions of conceptual and language-based art. “I found a weed” seeks to draw attention to the relationship between viewership and the physical proximity of artwork by presenting works that involve playful treatment of forms that are seemingly familiar yet unexpected. The gallery is open for public viewing from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday or by appointment. Free parking is available in the parking garage at Troost Avenue and 52nd Street or in lots accessed through the campus entrance at Troost Avenue and 54th Street.
