Polish-born artist Maja Godlewska will showcase works on paper and large-scale installations in On the Basis of Encounters, an exhibition opening with an artist talk at 6:30 p.m. and an opening reception from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9 at the Greenlease Gallery of Contemporary Art on the Rockhurst University campus.

Simultaneously inspired and repulsed by the shaping and reshaping of nature caused by humans — especially tourists and selfie-takers — Godlewska presents overwhelmingly beautiful works showcasing natural beauty and the human subjects within them. By shrinking the scale of the humans in each work, Godlewska explores her perspective on our relationship with nature. In Godlewska’s works, the sky, jungle and waters swallow and defeat the human consumers, showing Mother Nature’s domination of the long game.

Godlewska is an associate professor of painting at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. She has exhibited her work internationally in more than 100 solo and group shows.

On the Basis of Encounters will be on display through Dec. 8 in the Greenlease Gallery, located between Van Ackeren and Sedgwick halls on the Rockhurst University campus. The gallery is open for public viewing from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday or by appointment.
