Kantorei will join forces with London based pianist and composer Will Todd to give a weekend of US Premieres of his new, groundbreaking “Passion Music.” Telling the story of the Crucifixion along with KC Jazz powerhouse Millie Edwards.
Commissioned for the choirs of St Martin in the Fields, London in 2018, Passion Music continues the fusion of jazz and choral music so successfully blended in Will Todd's Mass in Blue. The structure highlights different points in the Passion story, beginning with a new setting of 'Greater love has no man' and including an evocative Stabat Mater, a movement focusing on the seven last words of Christ, and a setting of 'Were you there when they crucified my Lord?'. While some sections are reflective, Todd also makes full use of his understanding of energetic jazz and gospel.
Millie Edwards will be given plenty of expressive freedom, singing both with the Kantorei KC and independently to achieve the characteristic jazz-soul style. The seven-piece jazz accompaniment, all students and alumni of the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, provides a background at times intimate and spellbinding, at others driving and sensual. The work will have just received its first US premiere on February, 26th 2019 at the Helzberg Hall for the American Choral Directors International Conference in Kansas City.
Be sure to make plans to attend this ONE TIME only performance. Regular Kantorei KC guests won't know what hit them. This is unlike any project we have yet to undertake. Join us!
