Pop Up Film Haus presents "The Flying Classroom"

Presented by Goethe Pop Up Kansas City at Goethe Pop Up Kansas City

German Cinema in the Crossroads

As part of the Year of German-American Friendship we invite everyone to our Pop Up Film Haus to discover German cinema through a curated selection of films. Each film will be shown with English subtitles and there will be an opportunity for discussion following each screening.

This week at the Pop Up Film Haus:

The Flying Classroom, 2002
Director: Tomy Wigand
Cast: Ulrich Noethen, Sebastian Koch, Frederick Lau

Summary:

"Modern version of the novel by Erich Kästner. Jonathan is a new student at the famous St. Thomas boarding school in Leipzig. After quickly befriending the other students, they find a manuscript of a play and decide to perform it, but their choirmaster forbids it. He wrote the play together with his friend Robert, who disappeared when his father fled to the West from the GDR. This sets off a chain of events through which the children uncover the true nature of friendship.

Tomy Wigand’s version is the third film adaptation of Erich Kästners novel from 1933 after Kurt Hoffmann (1954) and Werner Jacobs (1973). "
