Tango ensemble Cucharada performs Argentina’s most treasured musical export as part of the Brown Bag concert series on Feb. 15. The concert offers a rare opportunity to hear the “Paris of South America” in the “Paris of the Plains”.
The free (donations accepted) Brown Bag Concerts, sponsored by Westport Center for the Arts, connect musicians with local audiences in an intimate space. They are held monthly from 12:10 to 1 p.m. at the Westport Presbyterian Church, 201 Westport Road, Kansas City.
Cucharada was originally a trio including Sean Mawhirter on guitar, Tina Bilberry on violin, and Guy Montes on flute. Cucharada also has galvanized a collection of artists to bring live tango music to the Midwest. Their goal is to be true to the Argentinian canon while carving out their own interpretations. Some of their works are time-tested materials while other selections are culled from more recent "Nuevo-Tango" acts. All of it is distilled through a conception of what just a few people can do with a broad palette at hand.
Financial assistance for this project has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency, and the Arts KC-Regional Arts Council.
