Please join us for the opening reception of INSERT, First Friday May 3rd from 6pm-9pm at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center, Undergrads Underground featuring works by Michelle Chan and Lulu Wang.INSERT  presents the perspectives of the Chinese experience through the lens of being an American born Chinese person and a Chinese born person. The works of Chan and Wang convey multiple viewpoints on Chinese and American socio-political systems, culture, and the challenges one faces straddling both worlds. This exhibition will feature photography and mixed media sculpture.

Michelle Chan incorporates mixed media fiber processes to create large scale sculptural objects and installations. Her work addresses being an American-born Chinese through the lens of pop culture and consumerism. Growing up in the States, Chan has felt like a perpetual foreigner to both her own country and to her heritage; with the expectation of representing one or the other.

Lulu Wang’s work comes in from a different perspective of having lived in both China and America at various times in her life. With both the knowledge and experience of capitalism, democracy and communism, she understands the inherent positives and negatives of both social and political systems. Through her work, she creates another world that exists between China and America.
