July Oak Park Library Exhibition Series - Kris Schmolze & Christy Steinberg

Presented by Kansas City Artists Coalition at Johnson County Library - Oak Park

OAK PARK LIBRARY - KRIS SCHMOLZE is interested in space colonization. Exploration and transportation have origins in his upbringing during the days of regular space shuttle launches. The great celestial massiveness of the universe, our world and the cosmos is the basis of many ritual and spiritual practices of every human culture on earth. The materials he uses have been appropriated from publications throughout history. Major inspirations in the work include The World's Fairs of the 30s, which promised a vision of a better future through democracy and capitalism, interpretations of anthropology through Western perceptions of civil and savage, and the space race of exploring new worlds while destroying the one we live on. All of these images generate a narrative of a postmodern world both excited and distracted by possibilities.
