In 2017, Valdez left his position at Portland State University to relocate to the Kansas City area to study Jazz Composition at the University of Kansas, where he also directs large and small Jazz ensembles. Valdez can be heard around Kansas City with groups like; the KC Monktet, the Jim Lower Big Band, and Cubanismo. He continues to present jazz clinics and perform internationally while teaching at the University of Kansas
