‘Pepperland’: Mark Morris dance group with Live Music | Feb 8, 2020 | 7:30PM – 9:30PM at Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, MO | Presented by Harriman-Jewell Series
Mark Morris’s career canon of brilliant dance works are as diverse as the songs on Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, so who better to choreograph an evening-length celebration of the iconic Beatles album? Commissioned by the city of Liverpool to commemorate Sgt. Pepper’s 50th anniversary, Pepperland is Mark Morris’s joyful, unabashed, and critically acclaimed homage to The Beatles classic that changed the world.
The Guardian calls Pepperland “gorgeously entertaining.” With colorful costumes and smart, sassy dancing, Pepperland captures the spirit of the 60’s swinging London. The original score by Ethan Iverson includes arrangements of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, With a Little Help From My Friends, A Day in the Life, When I’m Sixty-Four, Within You Without You, and Penny Lane, as well as six Pepper-inspired original pieces. Pepperland’s live ensemble of voice, theremin, soprano sax, trombone, piano, organ, harpsichord, and percussion will tease out the breadth of musical influences found in The Beatles’ magnum opus.
