Insurgent Learning Workshops

Presented by Charlotte Street at #NARonTroost

Insurgent Learning Workshops are a series of critical learning workshops developed by self-styled, Music Research Strategist, Marshall Trammell. Trammell is traveling North America on his fifth Music Research Strategies solo tour. Status Quo Is My Enemy is a platform for his “Indexical Moment/um” installation encouraging people to interact and discuss hard topics through improvised music and visual information.

Workshops are FREE to attend and will be located at the #NARonTroost building at 4001 Troost Avenue in Kansas City, MO. Free parking can be found in the parking lot around the building. Three workshops will occur on three-consecutive Sundays:

Sunday, July 21 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM
Sunday, July 28 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM
Sunday, August 4 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM

Each workshop is designed for intercultural conversation, understanding, and space to celebrate our discontent, pissed-offness, and community-building.

Workshop attendees will learn to improvise music and perform with other attendees. Musicians of all experience levels are encouraged to attend. You do not have to have any experience with music to attend and learn at this workshop series!

Advanced musicians, non-musicians and first-time musicians are all encouraged to attend and experiment! Please bring an instrument of your choice. If you are not able to bring an instrument or have further questions, you can questions to Marshall Trammell at marshall@solidarityresearch.org.

Workshop #1 (July 21st)
Harm Free Zone (HFZ)

Community accountability refers to the ability and desire of community members to adopt a harm-free way of thinking. This includes developing the mechanisms to prevent harm, to intervene directly when harm occurs, to repair harm amongst community members, and to transform individual and collective relationships.

HFZ is a transformative justice framework submitted as an antiviolence & community accountability training rendered as an Improvised Music workshop. As such, we examine the HFZ framework, interrogate harms in our midsts, and perform harm-free narratives.

Workshop #2 (July 28th)
Simultaneous Multi-Dimensionality (SMD)

SMD is a synthesis of African, percussion ensemble dynamics by Ghanaian musicologist, Dr. Willie Anku, rendered as the image below. I have appropriated this image as my contribution to updating and reinserting the secret Underground Railroad (UGRR) quilt codes into everyday life. The codes were a series of quilt block patterns which emblemized actual risk taking and solidarity with fugitives during the period of legal, chattel  slavery in the Americas. For the workshop, we will examine the canon of codes, fugitivity in our midst, and perform narratives of solidarity.

Workshop #3 (August 4th)
Solidarity Economics (SE)

The SE is a framework of concepts to connect “common causes to build systemic economic transformation and strategic cooperation from the grassroots” (US Solidarity Economy Network). For the workshop, we will examine the virtues of Improvisation as a new, creative economy.
