"Sucralose" by Cara Dunkerley

Presented by Kansas City Artists Coalition at Kansas City Artists Coalition

The exhibition "Sucralose" features recent work by Cara Dunkerley that focuses on the oscillation and fabrication of gender by depicting aquatic subjects, written indications of indecision, and stereotypically feminine visuals.

Kayak Instrument and Inflatable Instrument have delicate blacksmithing lines, sweet colors, and glittery shimmer. They cast shadows on the gallery walls the way they once did on Ox-Bow’s lake. Having once been attached to floating instruments as seen in Ox-Bow Photograph, how do these pieces function with context change? Questions of context also arise with Perspective, a small installation of an abstracted creature circling outside a fishbowl.

Lastly, March Drawings mix personal emotion with the studio practice. The narration in the pieces fluctuates in its level of privacy. The collaged parts both mirror the personal as well as state society’s gender expectations.
