Te Deum - Be a Blessing

Te Deum - Be a Blessing

Presented by Te Deum at Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral

The Beatitudes, seven verses from the Book of Matthew, are repeatedly quoted to speak truth and offer hope to Christians. These verses not only resonate with Christian followers, but their truths resonate universally: be kind, work for peace, stand up for what is right, be humble.

“Be a Blessing” pairs a Beatitude with a non-biblical text that illuminates the humanistic values of the scripture, inspiring listeners to be generous and caring citizens, regardless of faith background. The universality of goodness is demonstrated in ways that are inclusive and enlivening, with texts from Thoreau, British Philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre’s After Virtue, and even courtroom testimony.

The primary work upon which the concert is set is contemporary British composer Patrick Hawes’ Beatitudes, written for choir and piano. Interpolated between these movements are a wide range of composers, including Melissa Dunphy, Kurt Knecht, Shawn Kirchner, James MacMillan, Jake Runestad, and Rosephanye Powell.

Te Deum will be joined by pianist Sora Park.
