A Spanish Lament | Sunday, March 1, 2019 | 7:00 PM On the first Sunday in Lent, Te Deum will present Victoria’s Maundy Thursday and Good Friday Lamentations in the beautiful acoustics and serene atmosphere of Our Lady of Sorrows.
The Lamentations of Jeremiah, somber lessons delivered in the final days of Holy Week, have been set to music by numerous composers over the past centuries, but few resonate with the intensity of the 16th-century Spaniard, Thomás Luis de Victoria. Each lesson gains further poignancy when paired with the prescribed plainchant response. On the first Sunday in Lent, the solemn six weeks leading to Easter, Te Deum will present Victoria’s Maundy Thursday and Good Friday Lamentations in the beautiful acoustics and serene atmosphere of Our Lady of Sorrows.
A special aspect of this concert will be bringing in the world’s foremost expert on performing liturgical chant, Professor Eugeen Liven d’Abelardo of the Netherlands. He will be in residence for a week to coach and train our ensemble on the latest scholarship on Gregorian chant performance.
