Dr. Fullilove and her colleagues are calling on the nation to create observances around the 400 anniversary of the enslavement of the first Africans in Jamestown, Virginia. Dr. Fullilove and her colleagues are sharing this call and inviting individuals, organizations, and networks to respond in the ways that are right for them and their communities. To date, larger observances have included a Juneteenth celebration at Carnegie Hall in New York, NY; a panel discussion at SxSW in Austin, TX; and the production of a new musical about the Memphis sanitation workers strike. As meaningfully, smaller observances have included a sermon as part of Sunday worship; a small group of friends coming together for an evening conversation; and a university seminar.
Dr. Fullilove will share the project broadly and discuss some of the ways to build your own observances in the hopes that some in the greater Kansas City community will be inspired into action.
