DRAWING THROUGH I 10/04/19 from 6-9PM I Artist Q&A on 10/11/19 from 6-9PM I Vulpes Bastille Gallery, 1737 Locust, KCMO I A collection of ink works from local artist Michael J. Smith
Each drawing is begun with an initial impulse along a wide spectrum of specificity. At one end of this spectrum, a piece could begin with automatic drawing, line for line's sake, or pure gesture and build itself from this abstract and freeform state into nearly anything. Others begin with a clear yet small intentional image, the hood of an eyelid, a particular muscle grouping, an insect, a memory of a figure moving through space. After a mark or image is placed, action and reaction take over the process. Decisions large or small become an improvisational. Drawing from imagination, reference, and an abstract state within the growing detail of the work, a resolved entity is as much built as it is revealed.
Working with line, black and white ink placed with brush or pen it is possible to manipulate form fluidity. The versatility of line allows water to become a limb, entire faces to cave inward in the service of the texture. Multiple pieces are produced simultaneously and along the same wall-each session often involving work to every present image.
The ultimate intent being that once a drawing reaches a point of resolve, it may stand as both evidence of its own construction and representative of its own dream.
