Concert: Gewandhaus Woodwind Quintet

Presented by Goethe Pop Up Kansas City at 1900 Building

Chamber Music from Leipzig

Join us together with the 1900 Building for a special performance by the Gewandhaus Woodwind Quintet, part of the world-renowned Gewandhausorchester from Leipzig, Germany.

The Gewandhaus Woodwind Quintet was founded in 1896 and is one of the oldest existing chamber ensembles in the world. Based in Leipzig, the Quintet has performed extensively across Germany and abroad. This program coincides with the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and will help to close the Year of German-American Friendship: Wunderbar Together.

The five instrumental soloists of the Gewandhausorchester who form this ensemble are:
Katalin Stefula - Flute
Simon Sommerhalder - Oboe
Thomas Ziesch - Clarinet
Ralf Götz - Horn
Albert Kegel - Bassoon

Johann Sebastian Bach: Prelude and fugue in d-minor, BWV 539 of the Well-Tempered Clavier, arr. for woodwind quintet

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Songs without words,
arr.  for woodwind quintet by Harry Staton

Franz Danzi: Woodwind quintet op. 56 No. 1 B-major

Antonín Dvořák: American, Quintet op. 96, ("American" String Quartet, Op. 96, transcribed for Woodwind Quintet by David Walter).

This concert is made possible by support from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Washington and the Wunderbar Together – Germany and the U.S. initiative.

German Deputy Consul General, Dr. Andreas Götze, will be in attendance to deliver opening remarks prior to the performance.

A reception will follow the concert.
