Redaction & Defacement by Maura Conry

Redaction & Defacement by Maura Conry

Presented by Kansas City Artists Coalition at Kansas City Artists Coalition

Maura Conry’s work seeks to grab the eye, delight the ear, and fascinate the mind, and generate questions from the viewer. Conry uses her own body in the work as she is always available and doing so keeps her engaged with the underlying themes of her work. Her works are composites of visual images intertwined with symbolic and psychological overtones. For Conry, Pattern is always on the forefront, used to bring focus and visual surprise to the content of the piece. Conry particularly enjoys the juxtaposition of moving and still imagery in the companion videos and prints.

Conry’s identity series, “REDACTED,” shows how society labels people for ease of access. Conry’s work challenges these imposed identities and the way they may form people’s personal view of themselves.

In her video, “DEFACEMENT,” Conry describes the ravages of the beauty industry and the way it pressures women of all ages to strive to achieve a fantasized, culturally accepted standard of beauty. The junk of life is presented in a new light, as movement and pattern, something special that is nonetheless discarded.

Conry has always been experimenting, since her childhood, throughout her 79 years of life, and onward forever.
