A multi-faceted performance of traditional Indian dance, directed by local artist Hema Sharma.
Hema Sharma, along with Anjali Tata-Hudson and Jayashree George will present two dance pieces which respond to the theme "Cue!". The performances will take place at Kirk Hall, located on the main level of the KC Public Library Central Library.
The first piece, called "Vrikshasan: Where is Your Back?", will explore issues of environmental degradation and climate change, using the tree pose from yoga as an inspirational motif.
Next, the performers offer an example of chitra nattiyam, or "dance painting". The dancers will paint an image with their feet as they move upon a canvas with underlying pigments. The choreography of this piece stems from an ancient tradition in the Kuchipudi genre. Here, the dance takes its cue from ancient tradition, and is recast as a contemporary vision.
