Mike Cerv: Digital Debut | January 3, 2020 – February 29, 2020 | Belger Crane Yard Studios |
“In the early hours of the morning, as the sun begins to rise it shoots light through every hole in its path creating rays of light. Some of these rays peek into my living room and slowly creep along the floor and wall. As they slowly bend across the objects that encompass my life each morning I sit, reflect, and watch. My current series of ceramic vessels work to express that feeling of early morning contemplation and calm through a representation of light as line and color. Following the simplification of light into two aspects, each vessel is constructed with the two basic materials used by nearly every culture in early historical ceramics: earthenware and slip. These materials blend together to emit a range of tones like those I witness as morning transitions into day - both cold and warm, dark and light. My hope is that the user will experience the same comfort and tranquility I do in the solitude of daybreak, through exploration of the vessel like slowly moving light.” - Mike Cerv
