VIRTUAL - COVID-VIVANT

VIRTUAL - COVID-VIVANT

Presented by Studios Inc at Studios Inc

We at Studios Inc have began reminiscing about our past exhibitions.  Particularly, an exhibition from spring of 2017, Anti-mimesis: Life imitating art and other print perspectives for its focus on the tableau vivant. Tableau vivant translates to “living picture” and describes a photographed scene that includes posed figures and props. Former resident artist, Jamie Warren, recreated a Pablo Picasso painting using herself and friends in, Self-Portrait as Women in Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, effectively reinterpreting the role of the female in contemporary art. Patty Carroll, another artist featured in Anti-mimesis, engages a similar theme in her vibrant, deceptively dimensional tableau vivants in which the female figure is disguised by her surroundings.  Both artists use the tableau vivant to playfully engage and criticize societal norms.

During this time of isolation and stay at home orders, Studios Inc challenges you to recreate an artwork using yourself or those you live with and props from around the house. We’ve seen this practice trending on our social media feeds and the results are extravagant to hilarious, and no doubt creative.  We hope this will challenge the way you think about the artwork and your relation to it, while adding a little fun to home life as well. We will be accepting submissions from May 8th to June 4th, 2020 via an online call posted on www.studiosinc.org. We will post submissions to our Instagram and each week we will feature 5 of the most liked submissions. By June 5th, we will present a Juried Award and a People’s Choice Award to two finalists. The Juried Award will go to the submission that best fits the scope of the contest, decided by a jury of Studios Inc staff and artist Patty Carroll.  The winner will receive a copy of Carroll\'s recent publication, Domestic Demise.  The People’s Choice Award will be determined by Instagram likes and this winner will receive a puzzle of one of Patty Carroll’s photographs.

For inspiration visit artwork in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, or the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art\' permanent collection .   Both are available online at https://www.kemperart.org/permanent-collection and   https://www.nelson-atkins.org/collection/

Lastly, remember be creative, have fun, and stay safe!
