Audacity: The March for Women's Rights

Audacity: The March for Women's Rights

Presented by The Gallery at Kansas City Kansas Community College and Flying Ketchup Press at The gallery of Kansas City Kansas Community College

“Audacity: The March to Women's Rights” (Aug. 5 - December 10th) is a show of art and poetry Local Kansas City artist, Gloria Heifner shares portraits and stories of ten American women, who had the audacity to stand up for women’s rights on issues such as slavery, the equal rights amendment, and the 19th amendment, the right for women to vote in US elections. Beyond portraits, the installation explores expressive media including soft sculpture and poetry about the attitude of a march, both the emotional awareness of protest and the joy in unity and togetherness through work that evokes the idea of banners, flags and words as symbols of protest. Zoom into the reception and poetry reading on September 9th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm CST to talk to the artist and curator about this show. The poets will begin reading at 8 pm. Curated by Polly Alice McCann, the show is hosted by the gallery at Kansas City Kansas Community College under the directorship of Shai Perry in partnership with Flying Ketchup Press. The show also includes work by Kansas author and photographer, Sharon Rodriguez, and four national poets: Joan Gerstein, Candice Kelsey, Catharine Phillips, and Linda Neal Reising. This event will be listed on the Kansas City Public Library web page for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment as part of a grouping of citywide events, now all online. “We are glad to have this opportunity to share with students about the process of creative art and writing, the idea of activism and artivism, while also sharing the history of women's advocacy for equality,” says curator, Polly McCann. "The show will be up for students and staff on campus by appointment and we will make a video of the installation to share. In the future, we hope the show will be at another local university next year and we could add a few more artists. This year we are so glad for KCKCC for inviting us to share this work.”
