Seungwon Lee, soprano, UMKC Conservatory Guest Alumni Recital

The UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance proudly presents guest alumni recitals to the Kansas City community each semester, showcasing the breadth of talent our alumni bring to the arts.

Soprano Seungwon Lee earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in voice performance from University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she studied with Dr. Rebecca Sherburn. Dr. Lee has performed opera roles including Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Susanna (Le Nozze Figaro), Adele (Die Fledermaus), and some opera scenes in Carmen and Die Zauberflöte. She has participated as a Young Artist for Chicago Opera Theatre, where she appeared on numerous gala and opera concerts. Active as a concert performer, Dr. Lee has performed as a soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Theodore Dubois’s The Seven Last Words of Christ, and Sydney Peters’ The Atonement. Dr. Lee was one of the winners of Bel Canto Competition in Chicago division and appeared on the winner’s concert with Maude Miller Encouragement Award. She has performed for the North Shore Choral Society Festival under the direction of Dr. Donald Chen. She also has performed as a solo artist in numerous groups and ensembles within the classical and contemporary styles in Chicago, Kansas City, New York, and South Korea. Dr. Lee participated in Master Classes with the world renowned artists such as Mr. Martin Katz and Professor Mignon Dunn.

Dr. Lee has served as adjunct voice faculty for five years at Dong-Eui University in Pusan, South Korea, where she taught opera workshop and applied voice lessons to undergraduate students. While teaching there, she directed and staged opera scenes with her students every semester, and presented works such as Don GiovanniRigolettoDie Zauberflöte, and La Bohème. Dr. Lee was a recipient of the Outstanding Teaching Award at Dong-Eui University. Her voice studio includes all levels from 6th graders, adult students up to the most advanced. She teaches piano as well. Dr. Lee earned her Professional Studies diploma in voice performance from Manhattan School of Music in New York City, a Master of Music in voice performance from Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University in Chicago, and a Bachelor of Music in voice performance with a minor in piano performance from Pusan National University, Korea.
