Shinique Smith Artist Talk | June 10 at 6 p.m. | Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art | Join artist Shinique Smith for an artist talk in conjunction with her Juneteenth KC performance.
Shinique Smith will give an artist talk with insights into the historical and contemporary concepts and ideas that inspired this healing performance "Breathing Room: Evocation."
Smith’s multidisciplinary practice includes painting, sculpture, video, photography, installation, and performance. Exploring ideas of transformation and ritual through materials such as fabric, clothing, and personal belongings, breath, bundling, collage and gesture, Smith has built a complex visual vocabulary that resonates on intimate and social scales. Born in Baltimore, residing in Los Angeles, Smith’s work has been exhibited by many prestigious institutions including Baltimore Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, LACMA, and Studio Museum in Harlem.
This program is part of a collaboration among Juneteenth KC and three area museums: The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, presenting a new performance by Shinique Smith titled "Breathing Room: Evocation;" Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, hosting an artist talk by Smith; and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, presenting the exhibition "Shinique Smith: STARGAZERS."
