Red Apples, Green Apples

Presented by The Ekru Project at The Ekru Project

Red Apples, Green Apples marks the first solo exhibition by Alex Skorija. Red Apples, Green Apples opens on August 5th from 6 - 9 pm and is on view through September 25th, 2022. Presenting an ongoing body of work, encompassing drawing, painting, and sculpture. The exhibition’s title and concept are connected to nature and light. While living and working in rural Kansas, Alex created works inspired by his immediate environment — his family’s 15-acre apple orchard. Three generations resided on the once fertile land, which has seen rolling fields turn to scattered trees. High production costs and changing weather patterns impacted cultivation. Nature reclaimed and took over. These works preserve the intangible qualities and feelings of this home. Seeking a  lasting connection to a place lost to time. Skorija makes quick, asemic thumbnails with a focus on composition and line. Ideation drawing has always been the foundation of his artistic process. The forms are then reinterpreted on canvas, paper, or cardboard, determining the parameters of the work. Material dictates patterns, texture, and tonal relations within the chosen frame. His work is an exploration of intuition, with reference to modern art and classical techniques. Paintings are worked slowly, adding layers of color, glaze, or combinations of different materials like salt,  sand, paper, and concrete. His drawings and paintings are abstract expressions of things seen or felt,  grounded in lived experience. Alex Skorija (b. 1988, Kansas City) lives and works in Kansas City. In 2015, he received his BFA from Washburn University. He has shown locally in Kansas  City at H&R Block Artspace, MO. plug, Mo. Lodger, Mo and London Paint Club, London.
