OPENING RECEPTION 'Adapted/Adopted: Journey of Asianx Women Artists'

Presented by The Gallery at Kansas City Kansas Community College at KCKCC ART GALLERY

KCKCC Art Gallery in Celebration of South Asian Culture during Adapted/Adopted Exhibit The Kansas City Kansas Community College Art Gallery is hosting a celebration of South Asian culture through art, dance, and classical music from the sub-continent of India in celebration of its exhibition opening reception for 'Adapted/Adopted: Journey of Asianx Women Artists' on October 27, Thursday from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Located in the Art Gallery and the Jewel Center on the KCKCC campus. The event is free and open to the public. Curator Karlota Contreras-Koterbay, Director of Slocumb Galleries & Midsouth Sculpture Alliance Board member will speak about the complex and often understudied struggles of Asian women as they adapt to mainstream American culture. The exhibition features six Asian American women artists who employ art as an adaptation strategy in their plight to reinvestigate their hybrid identities as they seek belonging and visibility in their new home country in the U.S. Some of the artists also address the adoption phenomenon of children of Asian descent being transnationally relocated and raised in American families, visualizing memories and opportunities as vital issues. The exhibit features artists Cindy Leung, Eun-Kyung Suh, Haley Takahashi, Hong Zhang, Nichole Schiller, and Nina Ghanbarzadeh. Kansas-based artists Leung and Zhang will join Contreras-Koterbay for a gallery talk at 5 pm.   During the reception, the event will include a semi-classical dance that portrays the mythological depiction of Lord Krishna as a prankster by the students from Chilanka Dance Academy; and a South Indian classical Bharatnatyam dance piece by students of the Nartan Academy of Dance. This will be followed by an Indian heritage music concert which includes the Sitar, Bansuri/Indian Flute, and Tabla/Percussion. By the very nature of this century’s old music tradition, this concert is designed to be soothing and rejuvenating. However, these astute musicians from New York City and Kansas City will surprise you with sounds that mimic duet conversations reaching a crescendo, leaving the audience mesmerized.    “The Celebration of South Asian Culture” is from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. on Thursday, October 27thin the Art Gallery, which is on the lower level of the Jewell Student Center on the KCKCC Main Campus, 7250 State Avenue. the Adapted/Adopted exhibition runs until December 9, 2022. The exhibit and celebration is in partnership with the American Association of University Women Student Chapter, Center for Equity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Engagement, Fringe Benefits of Education, and the India Association of Kansas City. For more information on the event, contact Shai Perry, coordinator of the KCKCC Art Gallery, at sperry@kckcc.edu.
