Artist Statement
I’m Susan Ferguson. I’m a visual artist. I started handweaving in 2014. In 2019 I turned my artistic focus on the environment, exploring the colors, shapes and textures of nature through fiber, textiles and encaustic painting. I experiment with combinations of fiber, found objects, rope, yarn, paper, encaustic paints, watercolor, wood and copper to produce layered and textured artworks that are usually brightly colored. Much of my creative effort is done at a simple rigid heddle loom, where I weave mostly with my fingers rather than with manmade tools. I also use the techniques of painting, assemblage, sewing, knitting, felting, stitching, quilting, papermaking, fabric manipulation, sculpture and collage to express ideas and impressions about the world in which we live. I create without sketches, illustrations and guides. My work is intuitive, highly textured, messy and chaotic and beckons people to touch it.
