The duets of Agostino Steffani were considered his crowning achievements, even by the composer himself.
The works had many admirers (including George Frideric Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach) because of their deft contrapuntal writing and delicate instrumentation. The instruments of this particular program will be the more intimate of the Baroque instruments, such as the Baroque harp, guitar, viola da gamba, lute, and harpsichord — a rare combination on any stage, and never before heard on ours.
Lutenists and co-artistic directors Stephen Stubbs and Paul O’Dette unite an international all-star ensemble of musicians from the Boston Early Music Festival to present these masterpieces of Baroque chamber music, punctuated with instrumental interludes.
