Making Do

Presented by Open House at Open House

Making Do aims to celebrate the identity and history of this single-family house turned gallery while also carving out a new private shelter from its bones. The work in this exhibition is made out of recycled fabrics pieced together from what materials are at hand, much like a child building a fort, in an attempt to bring back a fuller picture of what the space might have once been. The installation plays with the notion of idealized memory, and fleeting attempts to return something to its former glory by any means possible. Idealized but still rough around the edges— a reminder that we can never retrieve back what once was or fully disguise ruins for what they are under the facade of nostalgia.

Lizzie Green’s work asks viewers to consider the relationship between childlike tendencies of building a private internal space from domestic space and the history of quilters making do with what resources were available to them.

About the artist:

Lizzie Green, based in Kansas City, MO, is a multimedia installation artist, rooted in and inspired by the textile processes and practices. Raised in Chicago by two artists, she was introduced to a creative lifestyle at a young age. Her latest body of work uses repurposed textiles to fabricate quilts and soft sculpture installation to explore topics of nostalgia, familiarity and sense of home in an urban environment. Green received her BFA in Fiber in 2017 at the Kansas City Art Institute.

About Open House:

Open House is an experimental and collaborative neighborhood arts project located inside a single-family house in KCMO. We provide space for artists to explore their practice, provide a platform for immersive experiences, encourage collaboration, and help stage communal gatherings.
